Nurses are the largest group of health care professionals in the United States, yet they remain underrepresented in health news media, according to a new study.

The research, titled "Nurses' Voices in Media: Strategies for Chief Nursing Officers" was published in the Journal of Nursing Administration.

The George Washington University School of Nursing's Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement partnered with the American Organization for Nursing Leadership to study the issue and look for solutions to the problem.

As part of the research, a select group of Chief Nursing Officers from leading health care organizations participated in a specialized workshop designed to build strategic media engagement plans, ensuring that nurses' voices are integrated into their organizations' external communications.

The initiative was developed to foster long-term change, empowering Chief Nursing Officers to share their organizations' nursing expertise with media outlets and shape public perceptions of nurses as health care experts.
